From The Gates of Heaven?
* Okay, you have to be an art geek to understand today’s caption. For everyone else, today’s POD comes with a short lesson in art history. So, without further ado, let’s begin.
Rodin’s Thinker statue is actually a small part of a much larger sculpture called The Gates of Hell. Did you see The Thinker on the lintel above the door? Pretty small, huh? That’s because the entire Gates sculpture is nearly 20 feet tall (6m for you European types).
Now, the interesting thing about The Thinker is that the man’s right elbow is on his left knee. It’s an odd pose, and it conveys a sense of gravity, which makes sense for a scene taken from Dante’s Inferno.
Today’s POD reminds me of the Rodin statue, but I just can’t imagine her on The Gates of Hell. So… my art geek caption.
For anyone who’s interested in more Rodin, check out the Rodin Museum in Philadelphia, or the Musée Rodin in Paris. You might already be familiar with The Kiss, but my personal favorite is the Monument à Balzac. I love the power and arrogance in the pose. I guess it reminds me of… well… me. 😉
