In case you live under a rock, Apple has a big event scheduled for today. Personally, I’m hoping for an iPhone/Verizon announcement (AT&T Wireless sucks… big time). But whatever El Steverino has to serve up, I don’t think I’ll drink the Kool-Aid this time. Apple burned me on the $600 iPhone. Screw me once, shame on you. Screw me twice, shame on me. And I have a positive learning curve, thank you very much. Still, it’ll be fun to watch. |

Yeah, at the “supposed” $1,000 price tag, I’d DEFINITELY wait a year for them to disappoint everyone ELSE!
I need a new small computer. WAS gonna hackintosh a Dell mini 10v but Dell hosed me in 3 successive efforts to purchase the damned thing over the Holidays so I decided to wait for this. Was gonna buy it no matter what.
BUT
$800 with Verizon data contract?? (ok, it’s a rumor but an educated one) No thanks!
$1000 straight up, without a keyboard?? Mmm.. even my fanboyness hesitates at that.. I can get nearly THREE Dell for that (yeah yeah you get what you pay for, but still…)
I’d rather they put out a revamped iPT with working bluetooth so I could use an external pop-out belkin; I’d be all set for my portable computing needs!
*sigh*
Ach. Maybe I can hackintosh one of the nice 10″ Asus that’s out now…
The iPad??? Are you fekking KIDDING ME?
If I order one with a bigger hard drive, can I call it the MaxiPad??
I can’t BELIEVE noone at apple noticed this… jeebus, how inane.
Actually it’s $699 for the 64GB model with wifi only. $829 for the 64GB model with wifi and 3G.
Try the Acer Aspire One, gyffes. It makes a hell of a hackintosh.
What are you talking about?! My $600 iPhone was an incredible advancement in mobile entertainment! Why as long as I didn’t actually want to make or receive phone calls on it I was always happy!
‘Can you hear me now?’
‘Yes I can but only because we are in the same room.’
For what it worth, I highly recommend the Motorola Droid from Verizon. I got one 6 weeks ago and can’t live without it. My wife thinks I spend more time with the Droid than I do her and has started to refer to it as my mistress. I’ve been all over the northeast with it and Verizon’s 3G service has been for the most part pretty good.
When I finally had enough for the iphone I sold it and pulled my old phone out of the drawer…I am still using it today…darn thing has to be about 6 years old but still working fine (well I only get about 2.5 hrs talk time a charge but still…).
I have been thinking of getting a Droid and do appreciate the advice.
If you’d rather not have Verizon, I’ve got the Motorola CLIQ on T-Mobile, which is another Android phone, and it works fantastically well. T-Mobile’s 3G service is faster than either Verizon or AT&T’s.
NOT where i live
Heck I would have Metro PCS if they had decent service neer my house.
Oh when I drive 30min to work they have survice for every little company around but at home it’s ATT or the big V.
My wife calls my Droid the “Avoid”… But she still wants to get one for herself when her contract is up.
Yes, the iPhone has given me GREAT entertainment. I believe the iPad will too… Of course, I didn’t or won’t buy either, but watching folksies that did is fun. Guy at work bought an iPhone and threw it against a wall within a week. ATT said, “Not suitable use. Claim denied!” I laughed.
I try to steer clear of the fanboydom, but you can still pour me a cup o’ that. Fortunately for me, I have a boss who is even more of a Mac head than I, so he completely accepts that this afternoon is a wash for my productivity whilst I watch the live-blogs, and then spend the rest of the afternoon reading everything that I can get my hands on about it.
eh – it’s a living.
I’ll be drinking that kook-aid in bug gulps. Love the iPhone and have NONE of the issues with calls that many seem to have. I’ve had blackberry devices in that past and several HTC devices even the Fuze, but would not trade for anything as this works for my business, my playtime and is a great way to keep the kids happy in the car or in a store.
My iPhone will be handy to pass the time while I wait in line for the new tablet!
heh, an apple big showing eh? and you say their new paperweight/doorstop is $1000?

From the NY Times:
“Expectations were very high for this device. Some missing features that many people were expecting:
* No ability to play Adobe Flash animations, widely used on the Web.
* No camera, still or video
* No non-Internet phone function
* Unclear whether you can bundle your AT&T iPhone plan with an iPad data plan
* No removable battery for a device that can suck a lot of power
* No removable storage”
Enough said. I’ll wait a long time.
Basically it is a broken iPhone (phone portion doesnt work)with a big screen…?

1. Flash. The Safari browser included on the iPad doesn’t have Flash — just like the iPhone. That’s a huge hindrance. How does Apple think it can get away with no Flash? Did it bake HTML5 in and forget to tell us about it?
2. No camera. A user-facing camera to enable video conferencing and/or video chats was high on the list of features expected. It doesn’t have one.
3. No multitasking. It appears that even though Apple has re-jiggered iPhone OS to work on this device, it still can’t run background processes. That’s a huge detractor.
4. No Verizon. The 3G wireless service that comes as an option with the iPad is not being provided by Verizon Wireless. It is being provided by AT&T. Man, can AT&T handle it? We know the scorecard there.
5. No widescreen display. The 9.7-inch IPS display may be capable of showing HD movies, but it doesn’t match the 16:9 standard screen dimension that many of today’s devices conform to.
6. No Mac OS. The iPad runs a new, in-house built processor that Apple calls the A4. It clocks in at 1GHz. That appears to be just fine for iPhone OS, but the iPad doesn’t run the more capable, full OS X, which is what would have really set the device on fire.
7. No GPS. The iPad has an accelerometer for a great gaming experience, but no GPS. That means Google Maps is going to have to rely on 3G and/or Wi-Fi to locate the iPad. So much for replacing your smartphone.
8. Enough storage. I realize that the iPad can sync content with iTunes and users can add/remove content at will, but 64GB (max size) is just not enough. Not enough for the games, movies and music I’d want to carry around.
9. Removable Battery. The iPad follows the footsteps of Apple’s iPhone and newer laptops in that it doesn’t have a user-removable battery. So much for bringing a spare for flights that last more than the 10-hour rated battery time.
10. No HDMI. How is it possible that Apple would skip an HDMI port for easy compatibility with today’s HDTVs? Stunning, in my book.
I’m a Mac Fan. However this looks like the name should be the iDud.
If you’re looking for something like this, I would look into ViewSonic’s Andriod based TabletPC that’s supposed to be coming out.
I think the iPhone is neat, and if I could have afforded it, could justify it and it wasn’t on AT&T’s network (Cingular burned me a LONG time ago with their crappy network) then I might have gotten one. Now I have an android phone, and wish I had waited. Not because the phone is a disappointment, rather that PC manufacturers are going to start getting into the smart phone industry now; that excites me.
Oh, and since no one else has made a typical Nicks POD post, I think I will.
Wow look at the Jug(s) on Koolaid … OH YEAH!!!
Someone on Beta News put the link of this video and I have to share it with you (I found it hilarious):

You would have thought that when Apple realized they couldn’t really make it a big phone, add a camera and such that they could have designed a “docking port” to allow an iPhone (or iPhone II) to augment the iPad’s capabilities.
The real question though, is who they hell really wants a tablet device? Who really wants 1/3 to 1/2 the screen obscured by a virtual keypad? They’re frequently too slow for fast typists and result in excessive wear on touch screens.
The keyboard they showed on screen during the demo was fake. In landscape mode the keys are very close together so you can;t type as if you had a keyboard.
Worse, in portrait mode because of the shmancy rounded back it wobbles back and forth as you try to type on tiny keys.
This would make a nice door stop maybe?
nah, it only weighs a pound an a half… an iDoorstop it is not.
