The Toilet of Venus * Boucher was a famous French painter, but his patroness is even more famous, and her name is synonymous with Rococo art. If you’ve ever seen a painting of Madame de Pompadour, then it was probably painted by Boucher. (Tidbit: Boucher’s Toilet of Venus inspired one of my favorite engraved prints, by Jean-François Janinet, who perfected the art of four-color process printing in the 18th Century. Modern printing presses still use essentially the same process.) The Toilet of Venus |

Sorry, French, I’ll give it a miss. Call me an ass, fuckwit, racist whatever you want. I’ll stick with the art and music of the Italians, Russians, Germans and even the Belgians (A country we should have let the Germans keep) before I go for French. Sorry Nick, it’s just how I feel.
What do you have against the country that helped U.S. to gain our independence?
That’s most likely one of his complaints.
hmmm because it’s the same one that fucked us in the ass during the Real gulf war (not the farce going on now). Dunno maybe when you are expecting some air support and you are told Yep, the frogs are gonna help and NO ONE FUCKEN SHOWS. As a result it’s withdraw and casulties. Gee maybe it’s just me but seeing your buddies getting shot up kinda PISSES ME OFF.
So fuck ‘em Should have let the Germans keep that country too.
agan sorry Nick this isn’t the place for that kind of rant. Please forgive my inability to forgive and forget.
That means I should still be pissed at the Artillery outfit in Nam that said they couldn’t give us support because they “had cleaned up the stuff and awaiting the IG. I’m not just pissed at the guys that got us into the mess in the first place. Move on, let it go, I learned to do that and am a much happier camper.
Still pissed over Chirac? I guess I could understand that, but I personally have moved on.
Besides, I would hope that America’s populous isn’t always judged by whatever fuck-tard we have in the top position at the time (“W” comes to mind for me, but please feel free to choose whatever american president you wish).
You can’t deny that they have had great art, music, cuisine and wine come from their country.
That’s my stance. I don’t really like The French any more thank Spanker does, but that has nothing to do their art, cuisine, etc. The Germans and Austrians made better music, though, with a few notable exceptions (Bizet, Pachelbel, Chopin, etc.).
And I like most French people I’ve dealt with as individuals. I just don’t like The French.
Nick,
Bizet was born in Paris. But Chopin was Polish and Pachelbel was German.
LOL! I’d better stick to art.
Oh – I won’t hold that against you. Yes, Chopin is the pride of Poland, however he did his best work while living in Paris and carousing with Liszt. There’s got to be something about that town…
We can’t forget Debussy and Ravel (in all of his insane glory with Bolero – just sit on Tonic for how long?!?).
I’m not much of an art geek, but I try to make up for it with music.
Chopin and Pachelbel ROCK!
ummm okay I do like french fries and french toast does that count?
As for great art, nope not seen any yet. Music? Lame. Debussy doesn’t hold a candle to Bach or Beethoven for something good to listen to. Gounod (Faust)? wake me when it over. Offenbach?, okay got me there ‘Orpheus in the Underworld’ is acceptable.
Food? hmmmm I can get good food at a Kroger. Wine? Yep same place and it comes from CALIFORNIA.
as for wine california is good and all but virginia wines are just as good.
there are a couple (wineries) nearby in Kentucky too, I have’nt been able to try them yet
Wow. Virginia wine is just as good as a top Napa Valley Meritage or Cab? I don’t believe that you are acquainted with great wine, sir. I’ve had both and for the prestige varietals, Virginia is pure table wine.
no french fleet and thus no cornwallis surrender AND eliz II is OUR queen
Be better than any of the last 5 presidents we’ve had and a damn site better than the current one.
Another great work of art! Keep them coming!
And a minor quibble. While all modern offset lithography printing presses can still use four color process perfected by Janinet, with it’s rigid pattern of same size dots, most are using the stochastic process. This process still uses Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black inks, but utilizes a random pattern of random sized dots. There are pros and cons for each process. Stochastic is a great improvement on Janinet’s process, especially when it comes to fine art reproduction.
Thanks for correcting me. I know in general how process printing works (I’m in the printing biz, technically, but on the internet and design side of things), but not the nitty-gritty details.
And I’m in the printing biz, but on the administration side, after serving my time on the press room floor! I’m chock full of nitty-gritty details!
And it wasn’t really a correction, as you are quite correct. Just thought it was a good time to edumacate the masses with the new technology!
Every country has it’s share of dickheads, but you have to put them to one side or you will miss so much
Biglol
Nick, I am enjoying the classic art week, it reminds me of days scrunched down in a corner, hiding, with a book of “fine Art” prints. Have you ever considered a “Classic Porn week?”
Classic porn as in Deep Throat, Behind the Green Door, and Debbie Does Dallas?
Or classic porn as in Victorian, ’20s era, ’50s, etc.?
yes
As Jiceberg implied, why choose, a week of both would be good. Heck go for “xx” decade of porn and fill out a couple month. I for one would like to see shots of Racquel Darrien . . .
Ya know theres a lot of art work out there that has nothing to do with Venus, thats considered historical Art, I like Art, I like Fine Art, but I gotta say its getting old.
Just what exactly do you hope to accomplish by complaining?
I mean, do you have any idea how I generally deal with whiners?
Seriously, this is me being nice. Very nice.
Hell, don’t be nice, Nick, rip’m a new a’hole!!!!
Dude, like it’s art with TITS man, i mean like you know, real freaking tits . . .
And now back to our regularly scheduled program of “What’s on Nick’s Mind Today”.
Dude, you want 7/27 porn you can find it. Go, please, find it.
Artistic expressions of NEKKID women is getting old for you? Really?
Have you given any thought that it may be your eyesight that is aging?
For myself, well I may not know art … well to be truthful I plainly do not know art!
But I sure do know loveliness in the female form when I see it
Guess my eyeballs are aging just fine . . .
Longtime lurker, funny that this is the topic that got me to register so I could send my two cents in…
The french did help us win our freedom, true. My humble opinion is that we PAID that debt many times over, in blood and treasure. We saved their county TWICE. No USA, no France.
Nice art, food and wine… but absolute idiots otherwise. They treat the USA with scorn until their failed policies/worldview drops them into the crapper… THEN they want our help.
Another take on The Toilet of Venus

(I thought Chopin was Polish.)
Chopin was most definitely Polish. Born in Warsaw to a French father & Polish mother, but lived and died in Paris. He did most of his famous work in Paris, and the French quickly adopted him as their own, much like they did the Corsican Bonaparte.
Women – A true inspiration for fine art, either being photographed or painted… Great art week Nick!
Nick, please ignore the rants. You are educating a lot of us who did not see or appreciate these paintings. Anyone can point a camera but these guys took weeks? to capture the scene and make and mix the paint. When you study the brushwork and positioning of the subjects it sometimes is amazing. Please continue explaining to us what to appreciate and what to notice. Thanks, SurFurBob
Nothing wrong with having a week of something different like this.
These works aren’t really my thing but I don’t hate it.
Thanks for keeping this site around as it’s always one of my daily stops.
Images are what feelings look like. Those feelings are informed by politics, social injustice, religious tenets and beliefs, geographical position, economics, etc. The real value of art. to me, be it photography, paint,or sculpture is what it shows/tells me about the author and what their message is.
It is patently unfair to any artist to ignore all of the above when assessing the intrinsic value of their work, either individually or as a body.
Thanks Nick for the reminders and I always look forward to a “daily stop” to keep me reasonably centered in my world.
I remember studying Art History in school. However, I’ve gotten a lot of information about the renaissance through classical period. Some of the information I remember, some I don’t. I have enjoyed reading the comments and looking at the pictures. What I like about this site is almost always there is something that expands my view of the human condition. I think women are the ones that really make men open their eyes to see what’s around them.
Sometimes I agree with the comments that are posted sometimes I don’t. It doesn’t really matter. It’s all for entertainment. I know that many would consider it exploitation and probably in some cases unfortunately that’s true.
This all reminds me of my favorite poem by ee cummings:
mr youse needn’t be so spry
concernin questions arty
each has his tastes but as for i
i likes a certain party
gimme the he-man’s solid bliss
for youse ideas i’ll match youse
a pretty girl who naked is
is worth a million statues
One of the things I love most about classic art is that the women are REAL women. Minor flaws in weight or shape don’t matter a damn bit. They’re still gorgeous examples of art in the female form. Who needs a toothpick? Real women are much more lovely with the curves we were born to have.
I really am loving the art week Nick. Thanks!
