But of course, certainly not unexpected.
And I bet Sarah Palin is supporting her Libyan allies as well as her North Korean ones.
WTF Sunday?? That picture and that caption make no sense at all.
It references the fact that France would put up no fight if threatened to be invaded.
Looking back in history I find the only time France actually surrendered was in the early days of WW II. When it was obvious that the Maginot line was a dinosaur of a defense system. Germany”’s general staff refused to fight WW I again and devised a better idea. Japan proved to us that our concept of navel sea power was in much the same way, outdated. Fortunately the Japanese high command did not realize how badly they had hurt us at Pearl Harbor or we would have been fighting them in California.
Even after the surrender the French resistance tied up an amazing number of German resources. So I can’t see the thought behind the picture. If you talk to WW II veterans they will tell you that our invasion of French soil in June of 1944 was greatly helped by the French Resistance. Eisenhower himself stated their effectiveness. Now I realize that “Ike” was not a military genius he just knew how to use the geniuses to accomplish his mission. MacArthur was a better tactician, Ike was a consummate politician in that he could get such people as Patton, Montgomery, and Bradley to actually work together. Where you get the idea that the French our cowardly I do not understand. Can you site for me any instances of French cowardice??
OK, Sunshine, here we go. In France, they’re having troble translating some Internet terms into French. In France, the law is you have to use French words. eg there are no French words for ‘surfing the web’ or ‘chat session, or ‘hacker. of course, a lot of other words don’t translate to French either. military, victory, deodorant etc. History books are always written by the winners. This is why French History books have a lot of blank pages.
Basically, the overall impression from the British is that we love France but would prefer it if the french didn’t live there
Never know when one might need a white flag. France has a lot of them.
Please see my above comment.
Those that continue to vilify the French are the same fucking idiots that think George “43″ Bush was a great president, and also refuse to recognize the erosion on personal liberty he initiated in the name of “liberty”. Don’t be so gullible! Freedom fries??? Fuck that, give me French fries!
See my comment to Gil, above. Can you get some ointment to put on your Red neck?
Jokes about french cowardice are as old – and time-honored – as jokes about polish stupidity, german organization or british food. Yes, they are all politically incorrect and tasteless these days. Then again, if you’re expecting Nick to show taste in anything but beautiful women or any political correctness, you haven’t been paying attention.
Nick, thank you for the laugh. Here’s my attempt to return the favor (a bit dated given what’s going on in the UK):
In heaven, the british run the government, the french are the cooks, and the germans are the mechanics. In hell, the french are the mechanics, the britsh are the cooks, and the germans run the government.
A few years ago I visited Germany with two men who had been captured at Dunkirk, we were going to stay with their former German guards. Their only concern was that they had to drive through France to get there! Like many of the british troups captured at the fall of France they felt betrayed by the French surrender.
Years ago? Yes, but remember Britian & France have been at war of and on for the last 1000 years, we love them as neighbours like the Americans love the Canadians & the Aussies love the New Zealanders.
Starman kinda nails it on the head tbh.
But in the interests of clarity, its really the English and the French that have been at war for the last thousand years or so. More often than not the Scots, Welsh and Irish (in various incarnations) were allied with the French against the English.
However, his (and MWM’s) point stands, that jokes about the French being cheese eating surrender monkeys is as time honoured as German cultural peculiarities, Swiss non-involvement and gold hoarding and of course, more recently, American Military invasion type entertainments. For those who are newer, Nick likes to poke fun at everyone from time to time, lord knows he’s taken a stab at us Scots on occasion.
Welcome to the internet, I suggest growing a thicker skin
I offer this, from before our “sportsmen” became obscenely overpaid, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vh-wEXvdW8
Stick to titty pics Nick, Legion or CIGN would make your error clear…if you lived
http://xkcd.com/386/
How can you stomp and shout about freedom of expression then cry over a French surrender joke?
Though I much prefer pointing out how France was the cause of the Vietnam war when I want to run them down as a nation.
It’s a joke! The people who took this seriously are the same ones who think SNL skits are objective news stories.
Truth is seldom absolute, except for yesterday’s POD.
Yeah, everyone here is correct… The French were always brave(read: 1940). Brilliant strategists(read: Dien Bien Phu). Supportive Allies(Read U.S. Action on Libya, 1986).
Hey Nick, did you near about the new French-built tanks? They have 18 gears: 17 of them are reverse, and they kept the last gear forward just in case they are attacked from behind.
Let me apologize for my American countrymen here.
Some of us still remember enough of our history to appreciate Lafayette, the French fleet, French money and the French troops that died in the birth of our country.
And the French that died saving American fliers in WW II. I realize it is a joke on an internet site that often pokes fun at everyone. I am just tired of the people who change history after the fact.
I know my intentions, along with everyone else, are not commenting on the individual French soldiers. My commentary was on the French government and leadership since 1940. Personally I haven’t changed ANY part of history after the fact. If you look(and without even looking closely), the French have been somewhere between inconsequential and a hindrance, more often than not, in international politics in the last 70 years.
How could it be rewriting history that Dien Bien Phu was a MAJOR military blunder right from the planning stage? And how could the French be looked at as a staunch and supportive ally for what their decision in 1986? They cost plenty of their own lives in 1954 and slapped Reagan in the face in 1986.
OK I’m done.
Please don’t think you need to apologize for me. As a matter of fact, please don’t think you need to say anything on my behalf.
And while we’re at it, let me correct your notion that I don’t know history (Lafayette or otherwise). It’s because I know so much history that I have nothing but contempt for France in general, and French military history in particular.
Well said, Nick.
French soldiers as individuals are perfectly fine. French generals and military leadership, to be quite frank, suck. And remember, the finest French military unit – doesn’t have the French in it.
Reminds me of the scam artist who twice, in 1925 I believe, sold the Eiffel Tower for scrap iron to easy marks. Heh!
