Nice beach…wonder where it is..
Haulover Beach – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haulover_Park
I found the picture here – http://southern-skinnydip.org/about_us
One thing bothers me. They saythe beach/park offers a food and umbrella renting area. The umbrellas I can see, and I know beer is always on a rental agreement but what do they do with the rented food when they get it back??
Happy Independence Day!
FTFY
Happy Independence Day. And thanks for calling the Holiday by its CORRECT name.
It’s the 4th of July everywhere except the places where it already rolled over to the 5th. Only in the USA and territories is it Independence Day, and we should all remember that.
Actually, The country of Denmark proudly celebrates Independence Day with us on this 4th of July.
It might be a practice that has gone out of use, but Denmark started celebrating the 4th with fireworks after WW2 as a way to give thanks for being freed from Nazi tyranny.
Happy Independence Day indeed…
Brought to you with Pride and Honor by the US Military.
Independence from what exactly? From the tyranny of British Rule? Give me a break. It’s a day like every other day. You still have to eat and go to the bathroom. Children are born, people get sick and people still die.
As for the declaration itself, for example, the phrase “that all men are created equal”, although true, sticks in my throat. When spouted by the schoolyard bully, it is not a self-evident truth. It seems to be missing “but some animals are more equal than others.” – in response to “Brought to you with Pride and Honor by the US Military”
Just a thought.
Isn’t it nice to feel free to voice your opinion without fear of serious retribution. Of course, I would not recommend speaking in that manner in bars near military bases, especially Navy Bases or Marine Corps Camps if you are wishing to avoid unpleasant consequences, even unintended ones. As smart as swabbies and grunts are they are quick to misunderstand if just for the sake of having a bit of fun.
Tyranny or not… Thousands of men.. good men died in the Revolutionary war fighting for a cause they believed in. Independence day is a day of remembrance… it is a day of celebration, celebrating the birth of our country. Everybody I talk to.. regardless of country of origin celebrates said days. Be it Canada Day, Australia Day, or whatever have you.
And I’m sure many of my marine friends would love to share their thoughts with you in regards to this post. Though they’re off serving their country right now.
But hey… they’re just thoughts right?
Yup, just thoughts. Really, it’s just another birthday. That of a country, as opposed to that of a person. On my birthday I still do all the things I do every other day: eat, drink, sleep, go to work, what have you.
Some choose to hype it up on the nation’s birthday in the name of national pride. I am not proud to be considered the aforementioned schoolyard bully. I take no pride in bossing others around and spouting that my way of life is better than anyone else’s. I am glad to be where I am, but I try not to beleaguer the point, especially to those less fortunate, or those who don’t live in as free a society as I do. (And just how free am I, anyway? If I voice MY OPINION and it doesn’t mesh with others’, I could get my face smashed in.) Many of these other people believe theirs is a good system for whatever reason. That’s fine by me, as long as they don’t impose their beliefs, or lack thereof, on me.
The poem, Desiderata, is sort of my creed. With paraphrasing, I believe that we, I and every one of you, have a right to be here, whatever we conceive our God to be. But in the name of all that is sacred, live and let live.
That’s what a nation’s birthday is to me, a celebration of a life, or a way of life. Calling it Independence Day is throwing away one’s heritage and thumbing one’s nose at those from whom we gained independence. “Take that, you bastards! We whooped your ass once and we’ll do it again if we have to.”
Defending one’s property and rights is great and all – and thanks to those in the military for maintianing our freedom – but belligerent bullying is not for me.
Happy 235th Birthday, America!
Nice!
In response to your comment “Independence from what exactly? From the tyranny of British Rule? Give me a break” I might suggest you go read about the American Revolutionary War, and the reasons behind it. But I believe that even if you are an American, you have little, if any, national pride. That does not have to take the form of a “schoolyard bully”, but of understanding of and love for one’s country. Pride does not have to mean arrogance or self-righteousness by the way.
I would say that the happier is the girl in the 2nd, unless the guys are bi/gay/something in between…
