Indeed they don’t. And Mr. Eisenstaedt certainly took some great photographs.
Sorry, but Marilyn just never did it for me. Growing up near the end of her career, I found her to be too sterotypical of everything considered ‘attractive’ in the 50s, whereas I was more interested in the more typically ‘girl next door’ types in the 70s and 80s.
Ah, but that’s the fault of the stereotype, not her. She WAS beautiful, and a lot more talented than the mavens would let her be.
She was also unobtainable, so the girl next door thing worked for us both. After all, they were just next door!
Hear, hear.
Me neither, but I miss her. Her iconic updraft pose from The Seven Year Itch is more famous than Michelangelo’s David.
Ugly couches? I did not think they were ever in style.
Even more beautiful without the make-up.
She did what she wanted, fucked who she wanted and inspite of the producers who held her back she made it to the top…and she had the best set of tits you could ever ask for….ask the kennedys or the rat pack or some poor guy she just happened to think looked inviting….
Love photos like this. In my mind this was the real Marilyn. But then again I was a Betty Page fan.
Hello, Norma Jean….
Stunning…..better like this than the promo photos…
Take a look at this article from the New York Times:
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/10/dining/10marilyn.html
After reading the article, I have to say – kind of touching, isn’t it? Marilyn was this larger-than-life icon, and here she was, cooking stuffing for her husband the way he liked it (“No Garlic”). Despite our view of her, in the end she was just a woman trying to please the man she loved, if only for a while.
I always think how hard it must have been to be her. There really wasn’t very much of a template for her to follow. The media attention and frenzy that accompanied her was a product of that age and she was among the first to feel the new crush of mass media. Looking now at the fate of so many young starlets I shudder to think of how she saw herself. In that regard, it is a comforting thought to think of her in the kitchen, away from the limelight, making dinner for her and Joe. Maybe that was why he always sent her roses (when Marilyn died, it was Joe who organized Monroe’s funeral and had white roses delivered to her grave twice a week)?
Sometimes, what everyone knows about a person is just the image we collectively give them. Sometimes we forget that everyone is human, that we all have our wants and wishes and needs. And sometimes, that means that all the planet’s sexiest woman wants to do is to feed her man a meal she made with her own two hands.
Very well said.
No argument.
Too bad Joe was an abusive asshole to her. If she didn’t cook dinner he’d probably hit her.
Sometimes, what everyone knows about a person is just the image we collectively give them.
Wonderful picture and so well said
