Islam is not a religion of peace and tolerance by any modern definition. Can you take your Bible into Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan? What religion still practices genital mutilation on its women? What religion still has Honor Killings? What religion wants equal but separate protection under the law, you are prosecuted to the full extent of the federal law, but they only want to be judged under Sharia law? I would agree that it is a bad understanding if only a few believe the way of the hijackers but you have entire nations that believe that way.

I hate to say it, but it’s more like ‘fuck you NYC & America’. Just like in the original Afghanistan invasion (the Russian one), they’ve gotten us to spend ourselves into failure. This ‘memorial’ cost $700 million, and will continue to cost $60million/year. We can’t afford this, nor several decades long wars. If we fail financially, taking the rest of the western world with us, then ‘they’ (the terrorists, not the Islamists) will have won.

As much as I deplore the attack on America on September 11 and its link to Islamist radicals (terrorists), I refuse to condemn all Islamists. I have met a lot of them in Utica, NY and am delighted to see how they have assimilated into the community and have jobs that exhibit their artistic and hard-working ethic. There are bad people in all races, religions, nations, races and cultures, and refuse to condemn all of these entities for the bad deeds of a few individuals. God bless the families and friends of those who lost their lives on 9/11 and those who developed medical ailments linked to the clean-up efforts. For those who claim that the USA cannot afford a memorial (the 9/11 museum) that will cost $60,000,000 a year to operate, do the math. That works out to $60 a year for every resident of Manhattan – OK, that could hurt some people. Spread the cost over the entire city of New York, and it drops to $8 a year. Now I will admit there are a large number of people who already have a need for every dollar they get, so lets spread the cost out over the entire state of New York. That drops it to just over $3 per person. But is IS a symbol of America, so let’s all contribute. If you are too poor (or too cheap) to contribute twenty cents a year THAT WILL BE SPENT IN AMERICA, I pity you.

when I see major groups of muslims in this country or elsewhere stage a loud, vocal protest over the actions of these “few”, when I see muslims openly condemn the Jihadi’s, Fatwa’s, etc. When I see them admit that Israel has a right to be a country.

The problem, or at least one of them, that besets modern Islam is that there is no central authority to condemn or forbid acts such as 9/11 or the Madrid train bombings or the attacks on us in the UK on 7/7/05.
This means that the words of the Koran can be twisted to justify any atrocity, throw in a largely poorly educated working class in the Middle East who are exposed to politically motivated anti-western propaganda and you’ve got a very volatile situation. This is, of course, a problem not limited to Islam. Bottom line is that whenever religion is cited as the cause of a conflict the real casus belli is almost always political and the dim religiods are being manipulated.
I’ve travelled quite broadly throughout the Middle-East and North Africa since the early 90s (I served with the British Military in Saudi Arabia and Iraq during the first Gulf War and have since spent a large amount of time working in the Oil and Gas industry over there) and I can assure you there were many many muslims who were aghast and disgusted by the 9/11 attacks.
There were also a much larger number of muslims dancing in the street.

I can understand Americans being angry at fundamentalist islamists, but to judge all muslims on these acts is about as sensible as me judging all Americans by the acts of Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols, or all Irish by the acts of the IRA, UDF etc.
Bullshit, they were just trying to pull the wool over your eyes. If you have done all that traveling, etc. then you know the tenets of their religion call for death or enslavement of all non-muslims. It is a fact and ask any Muslim if they believe in dhimmitude.
I do think the best tribute to the victims of that cowardly attack would have been to just rebuild the damned towers, more or less just as they were. You can knock us down, but you can’t knock us out. We’ll just get back up.
NOTE: I got this idea directly from, of all places, I comic book. I make no apologies.
The problem was, as anyone who worked in or near the towers knew, it was a problematic design from the beginning, and the way they ‘stood out’ made them a ‘target’, not only of extremists, but of everyday people too.
Being straight up and down, they’d create huge gusts of wind that would blow you off your feet, and the nearby crosswalks would have to be closed repeatedly because they were unsafe.
So I suspect the decision NOT to rebuild them had little to do with symbolism, and a LOT to do with correcting bad design.

There are alway people who misuse the freedom of speech for deliberately insulting or are not smart enough to understand the difference. In my eyes they are not much better then people who misuse religion for political reasons.

In military terms, carpet bombing and a sniper both get the job done, but one has a lot less collateral damage so they are not interchangeable. Find out who should die and get the job done because it should be done but be aware that most people are just going about their lives.
Remember, the US supported Iraq during the Iran/Iraq war and the Mujahadeen during the Soviet misadventure in Afghanistan. They were and are Islamic but their religion was of no consequence. Political affiliations and enemies are very fluid and have nothing to do with religion.

I was wondering if you, as a big fan of nice architecture, visited buildings like the Mezquita in Córdoba in Andalusia…
Yep. It’s a beautiful building and a fine example of Islamic architecture. I also visited the Alhambra Palace, which isn’t exactly Islamic (it’s Moorish, which is different), but equally beautiful.
I’m a big fan of Islam in the Ninth, Tenth, and Eleventh Centuries, especially how diverse and accepting it was in Spain.
But I’m not a big fan of Islam today, with its suicide bombers, jihadis, fatwas, and Seventh Century mentality.
Yeah, but remember, most of the great and beautiful and intellectual accomplishments under the Muslims at that time were actually accomplished by Jews and
Christians living in dhimmitude and paying a tax to continue to live. They were essentially slaves to the Muslims and created all the Muslim accomplishments. So when you look at all that fine architecture, just remember. it was not Muslim.
Actually, quite a bit of the architecture in Spain is Moorish, even after the Inquisition began (which is something the Christians should definitely be ashamed of). Matter of fact, I visited a synagogue in Toledo (Spain, of course) that was built entirely by Mudéjar craftsmen, i.e., Muslims who stayed behind and “converted” to Christianity. The interesting thing about this synagogue is that it’s covered in 8-pointed Islamic stars and other imagery, with only one 6-pointed Star of David in the entire place.

The problem with that assessment is the same as “America, love it or leave it.” Where does the former (enjoying the free pictures) deny the possibility of the latter (holding — and espousing — a view different than one already expressed)? At this point, if Muslims don’t speak out against the ‘extremists’ that supposedly profane their faith, then they are accomplices and do not deserve my pity or consideration. When I’m in a charitable mood, I look at Islam in a historical context and say that it is still a young religion, kind of close to what Christianity (particularly the Catholic Church) was during the time of the Crusades… many evil things were done in the name of religion. Hopefully one day Muslims will step up and prove their religion to be what they keep claiming it is – a religion of peace. Until then, I will only trust those who prove themselves worthy – the rest can go to hell and fry there!!!

A spade is a spade, and if you aren’t against those who would terrorize and destroy innocents with impunity, then you are obviously with them.
Any Muslims I come across who speak out against the violence of their brethren will be given the benefit of the doubt. All others should be tossed into a pool of bacon grease, fed nothing but pork sausages for a month, and then stuck in a room with about a dozen people chain-smoking camels. After that, we’ll let them go back home – and see how long they’re accepted.
That’s about as compassionate as I get for evil sonofabitches that try to force their ideals and ideology on anyone else.
