Picture of the Day

Portrait of a Young Woman
Raphael, 1519

* This painting is also known as La fornarina (the bakeress), since the subject is Raphael’s mistress, a Roman baker’s daughter. Raphael was the most gifted painter of the Italian High Renaissance, and left behind a large body of work when he died in 1520. (Tidbit: Raphael idolized Michelangelo, who couldn’t stand him. You can also see Da Vinci’s influence in the background foliage.)
