Picture of the Day

The Toilet of Venus
François Boucher, 1751

* Boucher was a famous French painter, but his patroness is even more famous, and her name is synonymous with Rococo art. If you’ve ever seen a painting of Madame de Pompadour, then it was probably painted by Boucher. (Tidbit: Boucher’s Toilet of Venus inspired one of my favorite engraved prints, by Jean-François Janinet, who perfected the art of four-color process printing in the 18th Century. Modern printing presses still use essentially the same process.)
